The Problem

The customer needed O-ring grooves machined into three large flanges used as part of industrial oil cleaning equipment designed to separate contaminants and moisture from oil. Two flanges were approximately 600mm OD and required grooves on the flared face, while the larger flange, approximately 720mm OD, required an O-ring groove on the inner face.

Accurate groove dimensions and surface finish were important to provide the correct sealing surface once the components were assembled.

The Engineering Solution

Pinney Engineering Services set up the large flanges in the workshop and completed the O-ring groove machining using the manual lathe. Each groove was machined into the required face of the supplied flange, allowing the O-ring to locate correctly and form the intended seal within the oil-cleaning equipment.

Despite the size of the components, all three flanges were completed and returned to the customer within one week.

The O-Ring Groove Machining Result

The two 600mm flanges and the approximately 720mm flange were returned with their required O-ring grooves machined and ready for assembly.

This job demonstrates how conventional machine shop capability can still provide an efficient solution for large industrial components where accurate sealing surfaces and fast turnaround are required.
