Machine Shop Modification: Construction Rio Bar Forming Die

The Problem
A customer had purchased a construction rio bar forming die from an OEM in Europe, but when it arrived, the product would not operate properly. The die was jamming the rio bar because the manufacturing process had not been completed to the required specification. Returning it to the OEM and waiting for a replacement would have created further production delays, with an estimated expedited turnaround of 3–6 weeks. For a production-based operation, that kind of delay can quickly become a costly problem.
The Engineering Solution
The customer supplied the OEM drawings and brought the die to Pinney Engineering Services to assess what could be done locally. We carried out a hardness test to understand the material and decide on the right modification method. Because the die was through-hardened, it could not be machined effectively using carbide milling tools. The best solution was to grind the forming die back to the required OEM specification, using specialised tooling sourced for the job.

The construction rio bar forming die was modified to OEM specification and returned within 36 hours. This avoided a long return-and-replace process with the overseas supplier and significantly reduced interruption to the customer’s production run. The customer was able to get back to work quickly with a corrected component that performed as originally intended.
