The Problem

A fish farming operation was having ongoing issues with pulley-driven equipment used across their ponds.

The original setup had a poor design where the pulley was rubbing against the splash guard. This created extra friction, which placed unnecessary load on the motor and contributed to motor burnout failures.

As the pulley centre wore out, the pulley became loose and wobbly, causing the belt to throw off during operation.

The Engineering Solution

Pinney Engineering Services reverse engineered and machined replacement shafts, serpentine pulleys, and splash guards to correct the issue.

The shaft was redesigned to suit the motor and pulley setup, while the pulley was re-engineered with larger outer edges to help keep the belt located correctly during operation.

The splash guard design was also adjusted so the components could operate without rubbing, reducing friction and helping prevent repeat motor failure.

Replacement components were manufactured for four separate pond machines.

By redesigning the shaft, pulley, and splash guard together, the issue was addressed properly instead of simply replacing worn parts with the same failure-prone design.

This job is a good example of how practical reverse engineering and machining can improve reliability, reduce repeat failures, and keep specialised equipment operating in the field.
