The Problem

The customer brought in a custom-made stainless steel exhaust manifold for a Mazda BT-50 that had distorted during fabrication.

Welding heat had pulled the manifold face out by approximately 0.6 mm, leaving the mounting surface uneven. If installed like this, achieving a reliable seal against the engine would be difficult and could lead to exhaust emission leaks.

Custom Mazda BT-50 stainless steel exhaust manifold set up for Exhaust Manifold Machining to correct welding distortion.

The Engineering Solution

Pinney Engineering Services set the manifold up in the machine shop and machined the mounting face back to a flat surface.

This Exhaust Manifold Machining corrected the distortion created during welding while retaining the customer’s custom-fabricated manifold.

The finished surface provided the flat, consistent mating face required for proper sealing when fitted to the engine.

Machined Mazda BT-50 exhaust manifold sealing face after resurfacing to correct 0.6 mm distortion.

The Exhaust Manifold Machining Result

The custom Mazda BT-50 exhaust manifold was returned with the mounting face machined flat and ready for installation.

For custom fabricated exhaust components, correcting distortion after welding can be the final step needed to achieve accurate fitment and a reliable seal.
