Reverse Engineering & Machining: Replacement Shafts, Keyways & Shaft Nuts

The Problem
The original shafts were damaged due to bearing failure and needed to be replaced. When bearings fail, they can quickly damage the shaft surfaces, threads, keyways and surrounding components. The customer needed new shafts manufactured from an old sample, so the equipment could be returned to service properly.
The Engineering Solution
Pinney Engineering Services reverse engineered the replacement shafts using the old shaft as the sample. This job included machining new shafts, milling keyways, producing new keyed spacers to align the saw blade, and manufacturing new shaft nuts to suit the required threads. The shafts also required left-hand and right-hand threads on the ends, along with a new shaft nut spanner made to suit the finished components.

The Reverse Engineering & Machining Result
Four brand new shafts were manufactured, complete with keyways, keyed spacers, shaft nuts and a matching spanner. This job is just a good example of practical Reverse Engineering & Machining where a damaged sample can be used to reproduce accurate, usable parts when replacement components are not readily available.
